There are two main types of pressure washers. They include an electric pressure washer and a gas-powered pressure washer. If you need more power, then opting for the gas-powered washer would be the best option.
As part of running the gas pressure washer, you have to consider its maintenance. This type of pressure washer will require that you use oil for lubrication of the engine parts. It is the reason you have to know which type of oil will be great for your pressure washer.
In addition, we will also look at the process of changing the pressure washer oil. You always have to do it right.
Types of Oil
As explained earlier, the gas-powered pressure washers need oil for the best lubrication. Because of the many moving parts, without lubrication, then the pressure washer engine will cease. The most common oil types that you can use include the all-purpose engine oils and the non-detergent pump oils.
As the name of the engine oil suggests, this type of oil should work for multiple engines. The oil is recommended for temperate climates that a user might be staying in. If the rating of the oil is SAE30, then it is good for temperatures above 40 degrees F. For those in places where the temperatures tend to fall below 40 degrees F, then go for the 10W-30 oil. This will help start the power washer with a lot of ease and provide enough lubrication.
It is worth noting that using the wrong oil for the temperature around you might lead to more oil consumption. No one wants to keep on topping up the pressure washer oil all the time.
It is amazing how pressure washers can also work great with non-detergent pump oils. When choosing such type of oil, you still have to make sure that you choose the 30W non-detergent oil. These oils have been used long before the introduction of oil filters. There is no doubt they are still good today.
Probably the only downside to using the wrong non-detergent pump oils is that sometimes they can lead to formation sludge in the engine. This makes the engine non-efficient.
Best oil to use
To choose the right oil needs a bit of research. You need to look at what the manufacturer recommends that you use for the different areas. This will truly help you identify what would be best for your pressure washer.
It is common for most manufacturers to recommend the use of synthetic 5W-30 oil. This type of oil is great as it can work well in temperatures as low as 20 degrees.
If you decide to opt for non-detergent oils, then go for those with the rating SF, SG, SH, SJ or even higher. Always consider using oil that is free from any additives. With the right oil, you will not have to worry about spending a lot of money on maintenance.
How to change the oil?
Now that you know which oil will be perfect for your pressure washer, it is also good to know how to change the oil. Before you can proceed to change the oil, it would be great to run the pressure washer for a few minutes first. This warms up the oil making it easy to flow and drain. Proceed to shut off the engine and disconnect the oil hose.
With a wrench, take off the machine’s oil cap and then drain the oil and fuel from the machine into an old oil container. Once the old oil is removed, top up the pressure washer with the new oil. Always be careful not to overfill the oil. This can cause smoking from the engine.
Before you can start the machine, check the oil level to ensure it is at the correct level.
Oil for a pressure washer should be treated the same as oil for your car. You would not want to use the wrong oil for your car and the same applies to a pressure washer. From the options we have discussed above, you should now have an idea where to start. Get oil from a trusted brand to avoid any problems with your engine.
If you decide to opt for an electric pressure washer, then you never have to worry about oil change.
